Appeldorne Marathon - February 3, 2008

On Saturday afternoon we traveled to Apeldoorn, The Netherlands (what should have been a 3.5 hour trip was really a 5.5 hour trip thanks to some road construction). Shaun ran a marathon on Sunday afternoon, finishing in around 3 hours, 40 minutes. There isn't too much to say for the town of Apeldoorn itself other than it was very cold (in the 30s!). In 2005 Shaun set a goal to run 5 marathons by the time he was 30. This weekend he met his goal: 2 Baltimore Marathons, 1 DC marathon, 1 Polish and 1 Dutch. It was really cool to see him meet this goal and finish really strong. Congrats Shaun!

The course was run primarily through the woods and even included 3 Moose Crossings or at least that is Shaun's English interpretation of some Dutch signs. Apparently, there were pictures of said moose (...do I sound skeptical?). Luckily our hotel was right along the race course allowing me to run inside and warm up in between Shaun sightings. Right after the race we grabbed some Chinese food. Ordering Chinese food in Dutch was incredibly difficult but we ended up having an awesome meal. The drive home was easy and we made it to bed before 10pm (just as everyone at home was gearing up for their Superbowl parties!). Congrats Giants fans! A shout out to the Shives- we were thinking of that white bean chili all day long. Click album below for more pics:
