March 23/24 - Rheinstein Castle/Mainz, Germany

My sister Laura and her boyfriend Dan arrived in Germany on Saturday, March 22nd. Saturday we spent the day taking it easy and spent the morning in a futile search for a place to eat breakfast. For those that don't know...Germany basically shuts down over Easter - Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays and everything is closed...and I mean everything! (grocery stores included!). Sunday we took a drive up the Rhein river and showed Laura and Dan a bunch of castles you can see from the car. We stopped at one castle - Rheinstein Castle - and took a self-guided tour. After the castle we grabbed lunch in St. Goar up the river. The winter has been quite mild in Germany..but while Laura and Dan were in town...it snowed in EVERY town we went to! Click here to see more pics from Rheinstein castle. Sunday evening we went to the Oberursel Bier Hall just north of Frankfurt...we had some delicious German food and tried some of the bier hall's own brews.

Monday we headed out to Mainz, Germany for the day. We had a fabulous snowy day lunch at a restaurant in Mainz, Germany - Heilig Geist (the Holy Ghost). Monday night we went to Apfelwein Wagner's in Frankfurt for some Frankfurt-made apfelwein and the "Frankfurter platter."

As mean as it may be, it makes me happy to know that someone else in this world has to deal with some snow. So no sympathy from me!
